Energy Smart Design
Considerations for integrated energy efficient building design
Energy smart design starts with reducing the need for energy. New construction can incorporate passive solar strategies, but for existing homes and businesses, the first step is to make sure the walls and roof are well insulated and the windows, lighting and appliances are energy efficient.

There is growing interest in 'net zero energy' design, or generating, with renewable resources, as much energy as you use on a net annual basis. For one or two story buildings with appropriate solar orientation and access, achieving net zero energy is possible with Solar PV and Solar Hot Water. For larger buildings or buildings with insufficient solar access, there is an emerging body of technology that expand the options for on-site renewable generation.
