Lighting Conservation

practical tips for saving lighting energy

Looking at your home lighting as a whole, integrated system will help homeowners make lighting decisions to increase energy efficiency.  Painting walls lighter colors can reflect the light back to your work space.  Using skylights and placing windows for natural daylighting can also reduce your energy usage.

Use task lights and separate wall switches that are centered on work areas, rather than using one high wattage central light.  Timer switches and motion sensors used for lighting outdoor areas, bath and children’s rooms can save energy by allowing the lights to shut off when we forget about them.

When away from home for extended periods turn off your lights, or have a friend stay at the house so someone will actually be using the lights.  A burglar alarm uses less energy than giving the impression someone is home by leaving the lights on.
